a) Present your town and its surroundings to a stranger

Our district lies in the heart of Bohemian – Moravian Highlands, one of our most extensive mountainous regions. The Highlands is not e rich country. Potatoes and flax are main agricultural products. Te climate is quite severe with a lot of snow in winter and short summers.
Our town is still one of the industrial centers of the area. Its New Town is purely industrial, ZDAS engineering works and iron foundry are important. The Old Town, dating from the late 13th century has its historical atmosphere. There is Renaissance town hall at the main square but the most significant historical building is the old Cistercian monastery. Several structures including the unusual five-sided Pilgrims church on Green Hill were designed by Jan Santini.
Zdar is the tourist’s starting point for trips into the northern part of the Highlands. The Nine Rocks has been regarded until recently to be the highest peak there. Darko Lake is one of recreation areas with a lot of camping facilities and a beach. Many species of plants and flowers are preserved in Zdarske vrchy reserve. In the Skrdlovice glassworks you will see no machines. The designers draw the design and craftsmen have to prepare everything by hand.

b) Do you miss anything in your town?

I think that the whole Zdar miss koupaliste. One can say that we have a lot of pounds and lakes but it is very polluted in summer. And if it is not polluted it is cold. We live in highland and the temperatures are not high.

c) Is there anything you would like to change?

d) Compare life in your town with big cities, small villages.

I live in Žďár. In my opinion is that Žďár is somewhere between bigger town and city. The life in our town isn’t very various although when someone wants to have a good time there is always possibility. I think the way of life isn’t as fast as in the big cities but on the other hand it has nothing to do with slow life in the village. These days Žďár is getting closer and closer to become a city but it will take a long time. The way of life is also influenced by the location of our town. People from highlands always had another lifestyle than the people from lowlands or other areas, although the differences due to location are disappearing these days.

e) Compare the behavior of people in your town and big cities.

Behavior of people doesn’t according to my opinion have to much to do with the place they live in. Everywhere are good ones and the bad ones. However I would say that the life in big city is more anonymous. People don’t care about your clothes, hairstyle etc. They are more tolerant or easily don’t solve you. Live in the town is much different especially in a small one. People know each other there. They know everything about you, if you have a girlfriend, if you smoke, if you say good day etc. There is a big gaps of private life. When you want to take care only about you and want the others to don’t care about you, you should move to big city. On the other hand if you like rumours, talking about neighbors but also very friendly surround you will be happy in the town.
